
The Centre
is a model resource centre for early intervention in Oman, encouraging
other regions of Oman to duplicate the same services. The Centre provides
training and technical assistance for staff and volunteers in the various CBRs. The Center also provides assistive aides to children with disability
and their families.
Training:
The Center
organizes training courses to develop the skills of its staff. These
courses include training skills in management, planning, communication and
general information about disability, awareness and counseling.
The Center in
collaboration with the University of Nizwa provided a Special Education
Diploma for its teachers and home visitors. Successfully, the first batch
graduated in May 2009, while the second batch is expected to graduate by
the end of 2012
Counseling for Families:
Family counseling has been proven to be extremely beneficial for parents
to understand, adapt and cope with their children’s impairment. Family
members need to reorganize and adopt a new lifestyle that caters to their
wellbeing.
The
Centre strives to provide the families the necessary
counseling required.Hence, parents become more involved in their
children’s individualized, therapeutic and educational
plans, which in turn help the children with better coping
mechanism.
Community Awareness:
The Center
organizes awareness campaigns and educational programs through various
media to help understand the issue of disability, increase social
awareness and encourage people to play proactive roles towards children with disability
and their families. This helps the community to better
understand the needs of persons with disabilities accepting them and
facilitating the process of their integration within the society.
Some of these
activities:

Introductory presentations
and lectures about the Center in schools, colleges and various other
private organizations.

Specialized workshops in
basic education schools for teachers and students.

Participation in fairs,
seminars and conferences for the promotion of the general awareness.
Support Group:
The Center encourages
families of children with various disabilities to form support groups to
help them better understand the different needs of their children, and to
provide for their needs of education, rehabilitation and treatment.
Through parents, these groups support families in overcoming
psychological, social, physical and technical difficulties.
